Dealing With Discipline

Be involved: Communicate and be involved with your children as much as possible. Show them that you care and love them and be a good role model in their life. By being involved in your child's life, you will get to know them more, who they are, who their friends are and what they are doing.

Set rules: Make rules for your children and stick by them. Sit down with the family and create rules that everyone has to follow. These rules could be about lying, cheating, stealing, curfew etc. Children usually do not deal with rules very well. But, you should make them so that it is fair for both you and your children.

Stay clam: Be calm and don't let your temper flare away when your child misbehaves. Try to avoid yelling and screaming, as this will teach your child that it is okay to lose temper. Also, make sure you do not get too judgmental and avoid criticism. Put yourself in their shoes and try to address the issue from that point of view. At the same time, also make sure that your child understands that you are unhappy with their behavior and why. If you feel that the argument or the issue is getting out of control, take a break and come back to it later when you have calmed down.

Avoid physical punishment: Do not spank your children in order to discipline them. Spanking has never shown to be effective than any other forms of punishment. In fact, it has shown that in turn it makes your children more angry and aggressive. So, do not spank your children. It will only teach that that it is okay to hit someone if you want your problem to be resolved.

Rewards and Praise: Reward and praise your children when they do something right and for their good behavior. However, praising your children too much can also have drawbacks. It may make your comments less effective and they may not have the effect you want on your children.

If these above tips do not work with your children, seek professional help. Visit the guidance counselor at your child's school or consult a therapist.
